Medical Assistant

Part-Time Regular Non-Exempt

Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a provider and/or nurse.

Responsibilities

• Prepare treatment rooms for examination of patients.
• Interview patients, measure vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and record information on patients' charts.
• Assist in the examination of patients under the direction of a provider or nurse.
• Explain treatment procedures to patients.
• Performs other tests (i.e.: EKG’s, strep throat cultures, urine tests, ear irrigations, etc.)
• Provides patient education as needed.
• Other duties as required.

• Attend and participate in meetings, training and conferences as required

• Wear position-specific uniform or required clothing consistently and follow SHM grooming guidelines
• Wear name-badge facing forward at all times while on duty
• Report to work as scheduled and on-time, minimizing unplanned absences and tardiness
• Demonstrate flexibility in the face of changing workloads and schedules
• Ensure the privacy, confidentiality and security of information.
• Understand and abide by all applicable rules regarding use and disclosure of patient Protected Health Information (PHI)
• Respect the privacy of staff, patients and visitors, and refrain from spreading unauthorized information through gossip or other means
• Maintain confidentiality of staff and sensitive information related to the organization and protect information from unauthorized release
• Consistently maintain confidentiality of SHM financial information
• Maintain a safe working environment.
• Comply with SHM safety policies and procedures and external regulatory safety requirements, such as OSHA
• Take responsibility for identifying and reporting/correcting any potential safety hazards as appropriate
• Demonstrate commitment to maintaining compliance with all federal and state applicable laws, regulations and policies.
• Report timely any allegation or belief of inappropriate behavior
• Cooperate willing, truthfully and confidentially in investigations when necessary
• Know and fulfill responsibilities of position within appropriate laws, regulations, policies and guidelines
• Perform other position-appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional and courteous manner. • Willingly respond to requests to perform other duties KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Able to understand and follow directions.
• Capable of communicating effectively with patients and the health care team, including the ability to explain providers’ instructions to patients.
• Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and health care team.
• Must respect the confidential nature of medical information.
• Working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Capable of following established departmental procedures.
• Able to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.
• Capable of using experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
• Good computer skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Able to read and interpret documents such as charts, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. • Professional manner and appearance.
• Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Strength sufficient to: lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels, and to move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.

Education & Experience

• Requires a minimum of a high school diploma/GED and a medical assistant certificate from an accredited school.
• 6 months or more years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
